FEBRUARY 21ST - NEW!!! - Confederate Archer Shell
Fragment with Fuse Hole -
Found at South Mountain
-
This fragment from the nose of a Confederate Archer shell with the remnants of the fuse hole came from
a group of fragments that were found at Harper's Ferry and South Mountain. Since it is highly unlikely that Confederate
shell fragments would be found in the sites taht are hunted at Harper's Ferry, it seems probable that this fragment came from
South Mountain. It is 3 inches long and about 2 1/2 inches wide. I will include a letter, signed by me, noting
this provenance. This item may be seen in case 63 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.

FEBRUARY 21ST - NEW!!! - A Large Canister Ball
from a 12 Pounder Cannon - Recovered at Gettysburg
-
This large iron canister ball was found by a local relic hunter at Gettysburg. This relic hunter
metal detected several areas on the battlefield (always on private property with permission) including an area just west of
McPherson's Ridge, an area near Culp's Hill, and area just northeast of Benner's Hill and an area behind Cemetery Ridge along
the Baltimore Pike. The specific find area of this canister ball was not given other than it did come from Gettysburg.
It is 1 1/2 inches in diameter and would have come from a canister round for a 12 pounder Napoleon smoothbore cannon.
It has been cleaned and lightly coated with a sealant. I will include a letter, signed by me, noting this provenance.

Confederate Mullane Shell Base Recovered from
the
Eastern Part of the Antietam Battlefield in the 1930s
-

This is a fragment from the base of a Confederate Mullane shell for a 3 inch rifled cannon. Evidence
of two of the three iron prongs that held the copper sabot in place are evident on the base - the third prong and central
iron bolt are missing. The bottom of the cavity section (top side of the fragment) rises at the center. This was
probably from a sub-pattern I Mullane shell (see Fig. III A-109 in Melton & Pawl, Introduction to Field Artillery
Ordnance). It is 3 inches in diameter. It was from a collection of relics that was reported to have been recovered
on the Eastern half of the Antietam Battlefield in the 1930s. The exact area was not given, but, based upon the type
of relics in the collection (which are primarily artillery), it seems logical to assume that it was the East Woods, the Eastern
half of the Cornfield or perhaps the Mumma Farm. These relics were all in untouched, as dug condition, thus the rust
on this fragment is flaking. This is a really great Antietam relic! I will include a letter, signed by me, noting this
provenance. This item may be seen in Case 63 at The Antique Center of Gettysburg.

Base Plate from a Canister Round for a 12
Pounder
Recovered
from the Eastern Part of the Antietam Battlefield in the 1930s
-

A very nice base plate from a 12 pounder canister round! The plate is heavy and the indentations
for the seven canister balls can clearly be seen. It was from a collection of relics that was reported to have been
recovered on the Eastern half of the Antietam Battlefield in the 1930s. The exact area was not given, but, based upon
the type of relics in the collection (which are primarily artillery), it seems logical to assume that it was the East Woods,
the Eastern half of the Cornfield or perhaps the Mumma Farm. These relics were all in untouched, as dug condition.
The plate is 4.54 inches in diameter and the rim has been bent in several places from firing. This is a really great
Antietam relic! I will include a letter, signed by me, noting this provenance. This item may be seen in Case 63
at The Antique Center of Gettysburg.

Confederate Artillery Shell Fuse Picked up
by Noah Getz, a Young Boy, at Gettysburg
in the Weeks After the Battle
-

This Confederate artillery shell fuse for a spherical shell was picked up by Noah Getz, a young
boy from Lancaster County, PA., who came with his father to Gettysburg in the weeks after the battle to bring supplies to
the wounded. While at Gettysburg, Getz picked up various relics of the battle including bullets, bayonets, artillery
items, etc - this fuse adapter was one of the items he recovered. These relics remained in the Getz family until
a few years ago when they were sold with the estate at auction. They were purchased by a local reputable antiques
dealer who was given the story by the family at the time of the auction. I acquired this item from him. I recently was
in contact with a descendant of Noah Getz who confirmed the story. The fuse measures 1 1/8 inches in
length and 1 1/8 inches in diameter across the base. The rim is a little bent and there are some marks from impact, but
overall it is in good condition. There are also some scratches on the base that look like they have made when or
before the fuse was inserted into the shell. I will include a letter, signed by me, guaranteeing this provenance
and a copy of the portion of the Getz family tree that shows Noah. This item may be seen in Case 63 at the Antique Center
of Gettysburg.

Kennesaw Mountain Parrott Shell Base found in the 1960s
From the Albert Ruh Collection
-
This shell base with iron sabot was a part of the Albert Ruh collection. Ruh metal detected in
Northern Georgia from 1962 to 1964. Based upon some surviving records from his collection, it appears that much of his
focus was around the Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield in Georgia. Although this shell base was not specifically identified
in the collection, it seems very likely that it was also found at that location. Many of the shells and fragments that were
in this collection were Confederate. Ruh cleaned it and coated it. This item may be seen in Case 63 of The Antique Center
of Gettysburg.
