MARCH 8TH - NEW!!! - A Confederate Sword Guard
Piece -
Possibly from a Rare James Conning Sword
From the Area of the First Day's Battle at Gettysburg
-
This is a small portion from the guard / hilt of a sword. This relic was found by a local relic hunter
in an area just west of McPherson's Ridge on the First Day's battlefield at Gettysburg (on private property with permission).
The decoration on this relic would indicate that the sword was probably an officer's sword and, after examining examples of
Confederate swords, the specific marks look like those found on swords made by James Conning of Mobile, Alabama (see Figure
22, p. 31 - Albaugh, Confederate Edged Weapons). This relic is 1 1/2 x 1 1/4 inches and it still has a little
of the gilt left. I will include a letter, signed by me, noting this provenance.

FEBRUARY 21ST - NEW!!! - A Large Section of a
Sword - Recovered at Gettysburg
-

This large section of a sword (22 1/2 inches in length) was found by a local relic hunter at Gettysburg.
This relic hunter metal detected several areas on the battlefield (always on private property with permission) including an
area just west of McPherson's Ridge, an area near Culp's Hill, and area just northeast of Benner's Hill and an area behind
Cemetery Ridge along the Baltimore Pike and near the Round Tops along the Taneytown Road. The specific find area of
this sword was not given other than it did come from Gettysburg. It is uncertain what type of sword it was, although
it is likely that it was a field officer's sword and there is a good probability that it was Confederate. It looks like
the sword edge was rounded near where the hilt would have been. It has been cleaned and lightly coated with a sealant.
I will include a letter, signed by me, noting this provenance.

JANUARY 18TH - NEW!!! - Unusual Dug Relic Confederate Pewter Canteen
From the John Graham Collection
-

This is a very unusual piece that I have been unable to track down another example of. It is
a dug pewter canteen that has the typical drum style (although it is larger than most drum canteens). It measures 7
1/8 inches in diameter. The canteen was originally just over 1 1/4 inches deep (this is how wide the remaining section
of the side is). The sheet metal spout also appears to be pewter. On the one complete side of the canteen, there
is an inner circle design on the face. This canteen came out of the John Graham collection and was apparently dug by
Graham himself. Mike Singer, a long time friend and relic hunting companion of Graham's, did not remember specifically
where this was dug (and it did not have one of Graham's characteristic location tags), but he thought that it might have been
near Fredericksburg. One face of the canteen is present and complete. Only about one half of the other face remains
- this piece is detached. About one third of the side band remains including one of the strap loops (although it is
broken). Graham propped the spout into place with glue and the remains of a toothpick. This is certainly an unusual
relic and may be very rare. The fact that it is pewter seems to guarantee that it is war era or before and would have
seen Confederate use. I will include a letter, signed by me, noting the provenance. This item
may be seen in case 63 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.

JANUARY 19TH - NEW!!! - Dug Relic Slocum
Revolver Reported to
Have Been Found at Gettysburg
in the 1960s
-

This is a really neat and rare relic. It is a portion of a dug Slocum Revolver. It was
reported to have been found at Gettysburg in the 1960s. The patent date for the Slocum was in April 1863 and 10,000
revolvers were produced in 1863 and 1864, so it is certainly possible that there was a Slocum at Gettysburg. Other relics
from this digger were recovered in the 1960s and 1970s along the Taneytown Road near the site of the Old National Tower (behind
Cemetery Ridge) - on private property with permission. Most of the brass frame is what remains on this relic,
although the remains of the iron spring are still present. I have not tried to clean this piece, but I can make out
some of the etched design on the brass, so it is possible that more might be evident if it is cleaned. Clearly, the
revolver is missing the cylinder and barrel. Dug Slocum Revolvers are very rare and ones associated with Gettysburg,
it would seem, are even rarer - sadly, this one is incomplete. ex. Steve O'Connor collection. I will include a
letter, signed by me, noting the provenance as I received it. This item may be seen in case 63 at the
Antique Center of Gettysburg.

JANUARY 19TH - NEW!!! - Remains of an Infantry
"Hunting Horn" Hat Insignia

-
About three quarters of a Union infantry hunting horn hat device - a portion of the neck
and the mouthpiece are missing. This was found in an area along the Taneytown Road near the Round Tops at Gettysburg
by a local relic hunter (on private property, with permission). It looks like the soldier might have started folding
it to destroy it as there are creases on the main portion. The attachment wires are missing. I will include a letter,

Confederate Sheet Iron Bayonet Scabbard
Tip with
Lead Finial Melted from the Fires on the Wilderness Battlefield
From the John Graham Collection
-

This is a really neat relic that testifies to the horrible fires that raged across parts of the Wilderness
Battlefield. It is a Confederate sheet iron bayonet scabbard tip with lead finial. The finial
is obviously melted - Graham's original label indicates that it was found in the area of the Wilderness Battlefield fires.
This was acquired from the John Graham Collection. According to Confederate accoutrement authority Butch Myers, Graham's
collection of Confederate scabbard tips was one of the most complete collections in the country. The scabbard tip is
3 1/2 inches long. There is a small dent near the top. The iron has been coated in some type of preservative.

Gettysburg Recovered Percussion
Cap Tin and Two Percussion Caps
-
A dug percussion cap tin (without the lid) that was found by a local relic hunter at Gettysburg (on
private property with permission, but the exact location was not given). Small tins like this have typically rusted
away after so long in the ground, so it is relatively rare to find one. The two percussion caps were also found at Gettysburg,
but I do not believe that they were found with the tin. The tin is rusted, as would be expected, and there are a few
chips out of the rim, but it has been cleaned and is in solid condition. I will include a letter, signed by me, noting
this provenance. This item may be seen in case 63 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.

Manassas Battlefield Recovered
Piece of a Confederate / Civilian Spur
-

A small piece from a brass spur - this appears to be from a very delicate spur. It was probably a civilian
spur and may have seen Confederate use. It is just over 1 1/2 inches long. A note accompanied this and other items,
which were clearly dug several decades ago (at least before 1963), that indicated that it was found at Young's Branch
near the Lake at "Bill Lawrence's". The Lawrence property was purchased fron the National Park in 1963, so
the relic must have been recovered before then. This area of the battlefield is near the Warrenton Turnpike (modern
Route 29) and is not too far from the Stone House and Matthew's Hill. It was fought over during both the First and Second
Battles of Manassas. I will include a letter, signed by me, noting this provenance. This item may be seen in case

Manassas Battlefield Unusual
Dug Large Button or Decorative Device
-

This unusual brass item is 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
There are two crude holes at the center of this brass item - a rust stain there indicates that
there was probably once and iron attachment wire. The other decorative holes are also crude. This could have been
an early button, but I think that it is more likely to be some kind of decorative device - perhaps for a hat? It is
certainly Civil War period, but there is no way to know if it was actually dropped during the battle. Still - a neat
piece with great provenance. I will include a letter, signed by me, noting this provenance. This item may be seen
in case 63 at the Antiques Center of Gettysburg.

Dug Knife from the Site of a Slave
Cabin (and a Confederate Camp) on the Spencer Plantation
in Brazoria, Texas!
-

This neat little Civil War era (or before) knife was dug by Frank Booth from the site of one of the slave
cabins on the grounds of the Spencer Plantation in Brazoria Texas. The knife, which has a 5 inch blade but is a total
of 9 1/2 inches in length, is made of heavy iron and has a wood handle that is held in place with two brass rivets.
The knife may be a skinning knife, but it would also be an effective fighting knife. Mr. Booth cleaned it and preserved
it after it was recovered. You can see that the wood has deteriorated, but is stable as a result of some type of
sealant that had been placed on it. Mr. Booth (who, sadly, passed away this past June), told me that he found relics
from a Confederate camp in the same vicinity as the cabin site. This is a neat little relic! I will include
a letter, signed by me, noting the provenance as it was told to me by Mr. Booth. This item may be seen in case 63 of

Gettysburg Dug Confederate Raking
Spur - Found near the First Day's Battlefield
-
Half of a raking spur that almost certainly saw Confederate use which was found by a local relic hunter
in a Confederate area near the Chambersburg Pike that was occupied on the first day of battle at Gettysburg (on private property
with permission). The brass spur is of a much lighter construction than a regulation spur. It is just over 4 1/2
inches in length from the rowel to the end of the branch that remains. The branch is slightly twisted and a portion
of the strap loop is missing. Despite the fact that it is incomplete, this is still a nice Gettysburg relic. I
will include a letter, signed by me, noting the provenance as told to me. This item may be seen in Case 63 at the Antique

This dug ramrod and nose cap or end barrel band were found by a local relic hunter at Gettysburg (on private

Large South Carolina Plantation Door Lock
c. 1750-1850
-

This is a really neat dug relic! It is an 11 1/4 x 6 inch lock from what was clearly a main door
on a Plantation house in South Carolina. The main frame of the lock and the mechanism (which is still present) are made
of iron, but at the center of the lock is a 2 inch wide brass key hole for a large key. I purchased this last year at
the Gettysburg Collector's Show, but did not get the name of the seller (who was also the digger). He told me that this
was dug at the site of a plantation (where the house no longer stands) in South Carolina, but did not give me specifics
other than it was a spot where quite a few artifacts were found. The lock looks like it might be colonial and I would
suspect that it dates from the 1700s, although I am not certain of this. It is rusted, as would be expected, but is
in generally solid condition. This item may be seen in Case 63 at The Antique Center of Gettysburg.

Remains of a Soldier's Mess Knife Recovered
from
the Eastern Part of the Antietam Battlefield in the

A 6 inch long section of a soldier's mess knife (the tip is broken off) with a tiny piece of the wood handle
remaining on one nail. It was from a collection of relics that was reported to have been recovered on the Eastern
half of the Antietam Battlefield in the 1930s. The exact area was not given, but, based upon the type of relics in the
collection (which are primarily artillery), it seems logical to assume that it was the East Woods, the Eastern half of the
Cornfield or perhaps the Mumma Farm. This relic is in untouched, as dug condition. I will include a letter,
