South Carolina Camp Pistol Powder Flask Half
First
Day's Battle
-
Half of a civilian style pistol powder flask. This relic is odd because it looks almost black
on the outer side and, there are small holes that appear to be too regular to be from corrosion along the outer edge. This
relic is 4 3/4 inches long by 2 7/8 inches wide. It was found in a South Carolina camp that was located west of McPherson's
Ridge near Seven Stars. The site would have been associated with the First Day's battle. It was found by a local
relic hunter on private property with permission. It is a little bent but is still a nice relic. I will provide
a letter, signed by me, with the provenance information. This item may be seen in case 63 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.

hunter and collector. The bone on the handle is cracked and there is a little missing. The iron has been coated

JULY 2ND - NEW!!!
- Soldier's Shoulder Scale Picked up by Noah Getz, a Young Boy, at Gettysburg
in the Weeks After the Battle
-

This complete shoulder scale was picked up by Noah Getz, a young boy from Lancaster County, PA., who
came with his father to Gettysburg in the weeks after the battle to bring supplies to the wounded. While at Gettysburg,
Getz picked up various relics of the battle including bullets, bayonets, artillery items, etc - this shoulder scale was one
of the items he recovered. These relics remained in the Getz family until a few years ago when they were sold with the
estate at auction. They were purchased by a local reputable antiques dealer who was given the story by the
family at the time of the auction. I acquired this item from him in 2004 and has been in my collection ever since.
I recently was in contact with a descendant of Noah Getz who confirmed the story. The shoulder scale
measures 7 inches in length. It is complete (except for the key), including the lightly rusted iron backing that holds
the scales in place. It is a little bent and dented. this is a very cool relic with solid provenance. I
will include a letter, signed by me, guaranteeing this provenance and a copy of the portion of the Getz family tree that shows
Noah. This item may be seen in case 63 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.

Antietam Recovered Fork - The John Graham Collection
This dug three prong fork with remains of the wooden handle comes from the John Graham collection.
Graham's original tag, which is still attached to the relic, indicates that the fork was found at Antietam along with two
other forks, two knives and a shaving cup. Graham was a prominent Civil War relic hunter and collector. One prong
of the fork has been bent and some of the wood on the handle is missing - it actually looks as though the handle may have
been burnt in a fire. The iron has been coated in a preservative. I will include a letter, signed by me, noting
this provenance.

JUNE 30TH - NEW!!! -Dug Rimfire
Revolver
-
This dug .44/.45 caliber rimfire revolver was reportedly found at a Union campsite near Fredericksburg.
I have not been able to identify the specific maker of this revolver, but suspect that it is a foreign import. Although
rimfire revolvers were used in the Civil War, this is a post-war piece. It's total length is just over 8 inches.
The cylinder is about 1 1/2 inches in length and the barrel is just over 3 inches in length. It is in excellent dug
condition and has been nicely cleaned. Since it is not a Civil War piece, I have priced it accordingly.

Unusual Civil War Era Bottle with Eagle &
Shield Motif
Found in Charleston, South Carolina
Unfortunately, this really neat bottle is broken, but it is still a nice find! It is a soda or
beer bottle made of green glass. On the bottle is a relief of the Union eagle on a shield with two American flags and
laurel wreath. I don't know if this is Civil war or not, but the patriotic motif that is so typical of the war seems
to make it a strong candidate. The neck and a portion of the bottle is missing - please see the photographs. The
bottle (as it is) stands 5 1/2 inches tall and is 2 5/8 inches in diameter. I will include a letter,

A Confederate Sword Guard Piece -
Possibly from a Rare James Conning Sword
From the Area of the First Day's Battle at Gettysburg
-
This is a small portion from the guard / hilt of a sword. This relic was found by a local relic hunter
in an area just west of McPherson's Ridge on the First Day's battlefield at Gettysburg (on private property with permission).
The decoration on this relic would indicate that the sword was probably an officer's sword and, after examining examples of
Confederate swords, the specific marks look like those found on swords made by James Conning of Mobile, Alabama (see Figure
22, p. 31 - Albaugh, Confederate Edged Weapons). This relic is 1 1/2 x 1 1/4 inches and it still has a little
of the gilt left. I will include a letter, signed by me, noting this provenance.

Unusual Dug Relic Confederate
Pewter Canteen
From the John Graham Collection
-

This is a very unusual piece that I have been unable to track down another example of. It is
a dug pewter canteen that has the typical drum style (although it is larger than most drum canteens). It measures 7
1/8 inches in diameter. The canteen was originally just over 1 1/4 inches deep (this is how wide the remaining section
of the side is). The sheet metal spout also appears to be pewter. On the one complete side of the canteen, there
is an inner circle design on the face. This canteen came out of the John Graham collection and was apparently dug by
Graham himself. Mike Singer, a long time friend and relic hunting companion of Graham's, did not remember specifically
where this was dug (and it did not have one of Graham's characteristic location tags), but he thought that it might have been
near Fredericksburg. One face of the canteen is present and complete. Only about one half of the other face remains
- this piece is detached. About one third of the side band remains including one of the strap loops (although it is
broken). Graham propped the spout into place with glue and the remains of a toothpick. This is certainly an unusual
relic and may be very rare. The fact that it is pewter seems to guarantee that it is war era or before and would have
seen Confederate use. I will include a letter, signed by me, noting the provenance. This item
may be seen in case 63 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.

Manassas Battlefield Unusual
Dug Large Button or Decorative Device
-

This unusual brass item is 1 1/2 inches in diameter. A note accompanied this and other items,
which were clearly dug several decades ago (at least before 1963), that indicated that it was found at Young's Branch
near the Lake at "Bill Lawrence's". The Lawrence property was purchased fron the National Park in 1963, so
the relic must have been recovered before then. This area of the battlefield is near the Warrenton Turnpike (modern
Route 29) and is not too far from the Stone House and Matthew's Hill. It was fought over during both the First and Second
Battles of Manassas. There are two crude holes at the center of this brass item - a rust stain there indicates that
there was probably once and iron attachment wire. The other decorative holes are also crude. This could have been
an early button, but I think that it is more likely to be some kind of decorative device - perhaps for a hat? It is
certainly Civil War period, but there is no way to know if it was actually dropped during the battle. Still - a neat
piece with great provenance. I will include a letter, signed by me, noting this provenance. This item may be seen
in case 63 at the Antiques Center of Gettysburg.

Gettysburg Dug Confederate Raking
Spur - Found near the First Day's Battlefield
-
Half of a raking spur that almost certainly saw Confederate use which was found by a local relic hunter
in a Confederate area near the Chambersburg Pike that was occupied on the first day of battle at Gettysburg (on private property
with permission). The brass spur is of a much lighter construction than a regulation spur. It is just over 4 1/2
inches in length from the rowel to the end of the branch that remains. The branch is slightly twisted and a portion
of the strap loop is missing. Despite the fact that it is incomplete, this is still a nice Gettysburg relic. I

Large South Carolina Plantation Door Lock
c. 1750-1850
-

This is a really neat dug relic! It is an 11 1/4 x 6 inch lock from what was clearly a main door
on a Plantation house in South Carolina. The main frame of the lock and the mechanism (which is still present) are made
of iron, but at the center of the lock is a 2 inch wide brass key hole for a large key. I purchased this last year at
the Gettysburg Collector's Show, but did not get the name of the seller (who was also the digger). He told me that this
was dug at the site of a plantation (where the house no longer stands) in South Carolina, but did not give me specifics
other than it was a spot where quite a few artifacts were found. The lock looks like it might be colonial and I would
suspect that it dates from the 1700s, although I am not certain of this. It is rusted, as would be expected, but is
in generally solid condition. This item may be seen in Case 63 at The Antique Center of Gettysburg.

Remains of a Soldier's Mess Knife Recovered
from
the Eastern Part of the Antietam Battlefield in the

A 6 inch long section of a soldier's mess knife (the tip is broken off) with a tiny piece of the wood handle
remaining on one nail. It was from a collection of relics that was reported to have been recovered on the Eastern
half of the Antietam Battlefield in the 1930s. The exact area was not given, but, based upon the type of relics in the
collection (which are primarily artillery), it seems logical to assume that it was the East Woods, the Eastern half of the
Cornfield or perhaps the Mumma Farm. This relic is in untouched, as dug condition. I will include a letter,
