NEW !!! Wonderful Round Ball in a Log from Cold Harbor
Probably from an Old GAR Post Collection with Original Collection Label
-

This is a very cool relic that I have had in my collection for more than a decade!
It is a round ball or case shot that was found in a large piece of wood or log at Cold Harbor. A section of
wood has been carefully removed so as to expose the relic. The log was carefully preserved at some point in
the past and has a nice solid feel to it and has a slightly shiny appearance from the preservative. It is 21
1/2 inches in length and 6 inches in diameter at its widest point. An old collection tag was with the relic
- it is faded, but reads "Section of tree from Cold Harbor battlefield with Confederate bullet (? - I cannot
read the last word)". The label has been placed between two thick pieces of plastic to preserve it.
About 1/2 of the relic is visible - it is either a .58 or .69 caliber round ball or a lead case shot. This
is a very cool relic that I have decided to part with! I will include
a letter, signed by me, noting this provenance. This item
has a little weight, so expect slightly higher shipping charges.

Bill Gavin
Collection - Enfield Musket Trigger Guard - Bethesda Church?
-
This Enfield musket trigger guard, which has been bent out of shape, but still has the iron
sling loop attached, comes from the collection of relic hunting pioneer Bill Gavin. Gavin's original handwritten label
was with the relic (it was originally on the relic, but fell off), but it is so worn, that it is difficult to read.
I believe that it says Bethesda Church, but I can't be certain. The 1864 Battle of Bethesda Church was fought just before
the Battle of Cold Harbor. Gavin, of course, was the first relic hunter to use a metal detector to search
for Civil War relics. I will include a letter, signed by me, noting this provenance.

The Lady Farm on the Hanover Road
Relic Smoothside Canteen
-
This smooth side canteen was found by relic hunter Karl Young on the land immediately adjacent to
the Lady Farm back in the 1970s or early 1980s (private property with permission). The Lady Farm
was the position of the Confederate Division of Major
General Edward Johnson during the battle. This area was also very close to Camp Letterman.
About three quarters of the canteen is present, but parts of it have been glued back together (I have included some
close up photos of these repairs) I will provide a letter, signed by me, with the provenance
information.

Antietam - Springfield Musket Butt Plate - The
Bill Gavin Collection
-
This musket butt plate, which retains both of its screws, was a part of the Bill Gavin collection.
Although I have relics found by Gavin at many different battlefield locations, I have very few from Antietam. I know
that Gavin hunted Antietam with his wife in May of 1948, but I don't know if that is when this relic was found. Gavin,
of course, was the first relic hunter to use a metal detector to search for Civil War relics. I will include a letter,

Nice Springfield Musket Butt Plate
- Possibly Battle Damaged
Found in the
mid 1970s near Richmond
-
This Springfield musket butt plate is in excellent dug condition. The tang is bent up which may indicate
that the butt portion of the stock may have been broken. It was found by John Duggan in the mid 1970s and was acquired
by a Civil War collector directly from Duggan in the early 1980s. It has remained in this collection until I acquired
it this year. I will provide a letter, signed by me, with the provenance

Gettysburg - Near the Lady Farm
on the Hanover Road
Sliced or Cut Bullseye Canteen
-

This half of a bullseye canteen looks like it has been cut or sliced across the face - the is in a straight
line and certainly does not appear to be the result of rusting or deterioration. It looks like the damage was either
done with a knife or a sword. A little more than half of the spout (and the complete collar) is present, but
is detached. It was found by relic hunter Karl Young on the land immediately adjacent to the Lady
Farm back in the 1970s or early 1980s (private property with permission). The Lady Farm was the
position of the Confederate Division of Major General
Edward Johnson during the battle. This area was also very close to Camp Letterman. The relic
has been very carefully cleaned and is coated with a thin coat of polyuretane. There
are some places where it appears that small spots of glue were used to hold pieces together - this was done before I acquired
the relic. I will provide a letter, signed by me, with the provenance
information.-

Change Purse Top - Found at Vicksburg
-
This is a neat item. It is the top metal part of a change purse - it measures 3 1/8 inches
across. It looks like it may have been nickle plated brass. It was found by Terry Waxham at Vicksburg in the late
1970s or early 1980s and still has his handwritten tag which indicates that it has an 1859 patent date. Personally,
I did not see the patent date, but that does not mean its not there. It was acquired from Waxham in the early 1980s
by a collector who has kept possession of it until I acquired it this year. I will include a letter, signed
by me, noting this provenance.

The iron remains of a pocket knife - it is 3 3/8 inches long. It was acquired
with a group of items I purchased a few years ago from a relic hunter who
had access and permission to search the property immediately adjacent to the Dunker
Church back in the late 1960s. This was private property at the time,
but has since been purchased by the National Park. I have included a photograph of
the side of the cigar box that held the relics when I purchased them - they looked like they
had been untouched since they were found (the box is not included with the
relic). The Dunker Church is, of course, the most famous landmark on the Antietam

This area is actually about five miles north of the battlefield and it seems likely to me that the relic may be
associated with the Confederate retreat from Gettysburg rather than the Battle of Antietam, but I cannot tell for
certain. I acquired this relic about 15 years ago from the Horse Soldier and it has been in my collection

Cavalry Carbine Sling Swivel - Totopotomy, VA
Wentworth Military Academy Collection - Found February, 1959
-

This dug carbine sling swivel originally came from the Wentworth Military Academy Collection. A
large collection of dug relics, most with labels or in boxes indicating their recovery location and date (apparently put there
by the unknown digger), which was originally held by the academy (located in Missouri), was sold at auction in the summer
of 2008. Most of these relics were dug in the late 1950s from a variety of camps and battlefields and remained in uncleaned,
"as dug" condition. This swivel has the original yellow tape label marked "Totopotomy 2/59".
Totopotomy Creek was on the Virginia peninsula (southeast of Richmond) and was the site of an 1864 battle fought during Grant's
overland campaign. I will provide a letter, signed by me, with the provenance information.

Gettysburg
- Confederate Bayonet Scabbard Tip
From a Confederate Position just North / Northeast of Culp's Hill - Along the
Hanover Road
-

A single piece brass bayonet scabbard tip of distinct Confederate style (2 9/16 inches long) which
was found by a local relic hunter (on private property, with permission), was recovered from a Confederate position, held
on July 2nd and 3rd during the battle, on the Hanover Road, not far from Culp's Hill. It sounds to me like it was found
near the Lady Farm or the Thomas farm - at one time, the lands around here were frequented by relic hunters, but now access
is no longer possible. The relics in this group were apparently recovered from a fairly deep depth and included remains
of leather (including a cap box that I have already sold and the belt that I currently have for sale) and the infantry button
that is also currently for sale. The brass is split at the bottom and there are a couple of other splits coming from the edges
and the rim of the mouth is rough. I will include a letter, signed by me, noting this provenance. This item may be seen in case 63 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.

This relic was acquired from a riker case which housed a variety of relics from different battlefields
identified by Gavin's handwritten labels. This is the side plate (with screws) of a Model 1842 Springfield musket.

Confederate Tin Canteen Spout with
Cork Stopper
Recovered on one of the Winchester
Battlefields
-
This is a neat little relic! It is the tin spout from a Confederate canteen, probably a drum canteen,
that, when dug, was found with the original cork stopper. The cork has shrunk from its original size and appears to
have a wax coat on it - I don't know if this was put on by the digger or if it was original to the cork and, perhaps, is what
preserved it. The spout, which is 1 inch in diamter, has deteriorated a bit, but is still in solid condition.

battle it is associated with. I will provide a letter, signed by me, with the provenance information.
