JANUARY 18TH - NEW!!! - Eagle Button with Rare
E. Ivins Philadelphia
Backmark - Found Near Antietam
-

This eagle "I" coat button (22 mm diameter) has the rare "E. Ivins Philadelphia"
backmark. Ellwood Ivins originally made buttons in Waterbury, Connecticut, but moved his company to Philadelphia in
1859. Although this is a standard button, this is one of the more difficult to obtain and thus desirable backmarks.
The button has a really nice even chocolate patina and is in excellent condition with no pushes or cracks. It was found
by a local relic hunter in Washington County, Maryland. This relic hunter worked an area along the Smoketown Road near
the East Woods on the Antietam Battlefield in the early 1970s (on private property, with permission), but also hunted an area
near Williamsport. In the case of this button, he was not certain in which area it was found. I will include a letter,
signed by me, noting this provenance.

Confederate Staff Officer's Button
Recovered in 1986 just West of the Area of Pickett's Charge!
-

This Confederate staff officer's button was recovered by a lifelong Gettysburg resident in 1986 just
west of Seminary Ridge and the area of Pickett's Charge (on private property with permission). The button, which has
a deep green patina, appears to have been of southern local manufacture. There are no stars surrounding the eagle and
the eagle looks right. A tiny bit of gilt can still be seen next to the eagle's head. The button has no backmark.
The shank, which may have been iron (there are rust spots on the back) is gone and likely rusted away. The button is
22 mm in diamter or 13/16 of an inch. There are no pushes on the face. I have included two photographs of the
face as the brown background allows for a clearer photograph but the gray gives a more accurate color. This is
a neat Gettysburg relic recovered from an area just beyond the battlefield boundaries! I will include a letter, signed
by me, with the provenance information given above. This item may be seen in case 63 at the Antique Center
of Gettysburg.
