RELICS FROM THE COLLECTION OF WILLIAM "BILL" GAVIN
-
-
William "Bill" Gavin (1924-2010) was a pioneer in the world of Civil War relic hunting.
Stephen Sylvia and Michael O'Donnell, in their book The Illustrated History of American Civil War Relics, credit
Gavin as being the first to use a metal detector to search for Civil War relics - "The earliest confirmed account of
use of a metal detector to locate Civil War relics occurred on November 25th, 1946 at the battlefield of Cold Harbor, Virginia.
The man with the machine was Lieutenant William G. Gavin..." (p. 192). Gavin's great success on that day
would lead him to many other "virgin" battlefields and he amassed a huge collection. Even after others began
to take metal detectors into the field, Gavin continued his forays. Deservedly, he became one of the nation's best known
and respected figures in Civil War collecting and ultimately published Accoutrement Plates North and South, 1861-1865
in 1963. Sadly, the Civil War collecting world lost Mr. Gavin in early 2010.
-
Many of the relics in Mr. Gavin's collection were kept in Riker display cases with carefully identified location
provenance. The relics listed below predominantly come from these cases. They will be sold in sections based upon
the case from which they came and each section will begin with a brief description of the site, a photograph of Gavin's original
case, and any other relevant information that might have accompanied the relics (unless they were not in a display - individual
pieces will be listed before the display sections). Buyers of these relics will not only receive a provenance letter
signed by me, but will also receive a sheet with a copy of the display case photograph and some basic information about the
recovery site.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire relics that were
once a part of the collection of one of the hobby's pioneers (at least with the use of a metal detector), so don't miss out!

DECEMBER
11TH - NEW!!! - Bill Gavin Collection - Fired Mushroomed Enfield Bullet with Remains of
Wood Plug
Found at the
Position of Massachusetts Men of Heckman's Brigade
-

This nice example of a fired Enfield bullet which mushroomed on impact still retains
a piece of the wood plug in the cavity. It comes from the collection of relic hunting pioneer Bill Gavin.
This bullet came out of Gavin's relic case #18. The relics in this case were identified as having been found
at the battlefield of Drewry's Bluff, specifically at a loaction occupied by the Massachusetts regiments of Heckman's
brigade. This brigade was outflanked and broken during the initial stages of the Confederate attack on May
16, 1864. Gavin, of course, was the first relic hunter to use a metal detector to search
for Civil War relics. I will include a letter, signed by me, noting this provenance.

DECEMBER
4TH - NEW!!! - Bill Gavin Collection - Enfield Musket Trigger Guard - Bethesda Church?
-
This Enfield musket trigger guard, which has been bent out of shape, but still has the
iron sling loop attached, comes from the collection of relic hunting pioneer Bill Gavin. Gavin's original
handwritten label was with the relic (it was originally on the relic, but fell off), but it is so worn, that it
is difficult to read. I believe that it says Bethesda Church, but I can't be certain. The 1864 Battle
of Bethesda Church was fought just before the Battle of Cold Harbor. Gavin, of course, was the first
relic hunter to use a metal detector to search for Civil War relics. I will include a letter,
signed by me, noting this provenance.

GAVIN - U.S. BELT PLATE RECOVERED FROM
HANCOCK'S TRENCHES ON THE WILDERNESS BATTLEFIELD - NOVEMBER 25, 1954
WITH GAVIN'S ORIGINAL TAG
-
This U.S. plate with arrowhead hooks has Gavin's handwritten label on the back - "Wilderness -
Hancock's Trenches - Brock Road Nov 25, '54". The lead on the back is almost complete with just some very minor
flaking on the left and right edges. There is a small scratch on the lead - probably from when it was dug. The
patina on the face is uneven - see photo. A nice plate with great provenance - found by the man who wrote one of the
first reference books about plates! I will include a letter, signed by me, with the provenance information. This
item may be seen in case 52 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.

THE BATTLE OF SPOTSYLVANIA
- FIGHT ALONG THE PO RIVER
| Case #59 - Battle of the Po River |

|
This case was identified in Gavin's collection as #59 and the relics were identified as having been recovered
from the site of the Battle of the Po River which was fought as a part of the Battle of Spotsylvania. After the fierce
battle in the Wilderness, Lee and Grant rushed south to Spotsylvania Courthouse. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia arrived
first and began entrenching around the crossroads village. The battles that would be fought at Spotsylvania would be
amongst the most brutal of the war. On May 10th, Grant sent soldiers from Winfield Scott Hancock's II Corps across the
Po river in an attempt to get around the Confederate flank. The attempt failed and the resultant withdraw back across
the Po nearly resulted in disaster when Francis Barlow's Division was attacked by Henry Heth's Confederate Division as it
withdrew.
More items from this case were added

STONEWALL JACKSON'S CORP - CONFEDERATE WINTER CAMP 1862-1863
MOSS NECK, VIRGINIA
| Moss Neck Relic Case |

|
This case was not identified by number in Gavin's collection but a label clearly identified the relics
as having been found at the winter 1862-1863 Confederate camp at Moss Neck, Virginia. After the Battle of Fredericksburg,
Lt. General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's corps made its winter camp on the grounds of the grand estate of James
Corbin, known as Moss Neck, just south of Fredericksburg. Jackson made his headquarters in one
of the outbuildings while his troops constructed shelters from the wood that could be found on the grounds. Jackson's
stay at Moss Neck is depicted in the movie Gods and Generals as is the Christmas day review of Jackson's troops by
Robert E. Lee.

MODEL
1856 ENFIELD SWORD BAYONET IRON SCABBARD TIP
-
From an unnumbered display of relics from the Gavin collection identified as having been found at the
Confederate 1862-1863 winter camp at Moss Neck. This is a neat and hard to come by relic. It
is the iron scabbard tip from a Model 1856 Enfield Sword Bayonet. It is quite large for a scabbard tip - 4 1/2 inches
long and 1 1/4 inches wide at the top. This was almost certainly a Confederate import. The scabbard tip is as
dug and has not been treated with electrolysis or coated with any type of sealant. A letter,

THE BATTLE OF SOUTH MOUNTAIN - FOX'S GAP - NEAR THE RENO MONUMENT
| Case #142 - South Mountain |

|
Identified as case #142 by Gavin, the relics here were recovered near the Reno Monument at Fox's Gap on
the South Mountain Battlefield (no recovery date was listed). The Battle of South Mountain, which was fought on September
14th, 1862, took place during the Maryland Campaign as General Robert E. Lee attempted to delay the approaching Army of the
Potomac as he gathered his army near Sharpsburg, Maryland. At Fox's Gap, the Union IX Corps assaulted the defending
Confederate brigade of Brigadier General Thomas Drayton. During what turned out to be a heated fight, Union division
commander Major General Jesse Reno was mortally wounded near the location of the current monument. These relics were
found by Gavin near that monument.
