MARCH 27th - NEW! - Bill Gavin Collection - Half of a U.S. Plate Skin with

-
This relic came from Gavin's display case #004 which contained relics that were identified as having
been found at Hill's 1862-1863 winter camp - "Camp Santee" - at Corbin, Va. This half of a U.S. plate
skin has clearly had the "S" neatly cut out - part of the cut section is bent back behind
the plate - perhaps the Confederate soldier was planning to make a better use of it! A
letter, signed by me, with provenance information and a copy of the photograph of the original display case will be provided
to the buyer. This item may be seen in case 52 at the Antique

MARCH 22ND - NEW! - Bill Gavin Collection - Rare Decorative Brass "WOODLAND
CREAM"
Container Lid - Similar
Example in Harris' Relics of the Western Campaigns -
found
at Camp Santee - A.P. Hill's Division Camp at Corbin, Virginia
-

This relic came from Gavin's display case #004 which contained relics that were identified as having
been found at Hill's 1862-1863 winter camp - "Camp Santee" - at Corbin, Va. This is
a 2 1/8 inch diameter brass lid from a cream container. At the center is a detailed deer. On the perimeter is
the company name "FETRIDGE & CO. FRANKLIN SQUARE NY" and "WOODLAND CREAM" is above and below the deer.
This is the only one of these that I have seen with the exception of an almost exact example that was found at Resaca, Georgia
that is shown in Charles Harris' Civil War Relics of the Western Campaigns (p. 213). The lid is a little dented around
the rim and there is a small dent to the right of the deer, but overall it is in good condition. This is a neat relic!
A letter, signed by me, with provenance information and a copy of the photograph of the original display
case will be provided to the buyer. This item may be seen in case 52 at
the Antique Center of Gettysburg.

Bill Gavin
Collection - Confederate Sword Scabbard Drag
found at A.P. Hill's Division Camp at Corbin, Virginia
-
-

This relic came from Gavin's display case with relics that were identified as having been found at Hill's
1862-1863 winter camp at Corbin, Va. This is a Confederate sword scabbard drag. I am not certain who the manufacturer
might have been, but the design clearly is not regulation army and almost certainly is from a southern manufacturer.
It is just under 5 inches long and is 1 1/8 inches wide at the top. There is a 1 3/4 inch split in the seam at the top
and a small seam split on the opposite side. It has been dented in several places and has been partially crushed at
the bottom. A letter, signed by me, with provenance information and a copy of the photograph of the original display
case will be provided to the buyer. This item may be seen in case 52 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.-
