BILL GAVIN COLLECTION - COLD HARBOR
-
Cold Harbor was the first battlefield that Bill Gavin hunted with a metal detector back in 1946.
There were several cases of relics that Gavin identified as having come from Cold Harbor. I will begin listing these
relics on this page as I make them available.

RELICS FROM A COLD HARBOR RELIC CASE (THE UNNUMBERED CASE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE) WERE
ADDED TO THIS PAGE ON JANUARY 8TH, 2011.

Gavin Collection - Brass Tourniquet Buckle
Cold Harbor - 18th Corps Position
-
This relic was not in a display case but was identified as having been found at the 18th Corps position
at Cold Harbor. It is a very nice brass tourniquet buckle - it measures 1 3/8 x 1 3/8 inches. The 18th Corps was
at the center of the Union position at Cold Harbor and suffered very heavy casualties in the doomed assault of June 3rd, 1864.
Cold Harbor was the first battlefield that Gavin hunted with a metal detector. A letter, signed
by me, with provenance information will be provided to the buyer. This item may be seen in case 52 at the Antique Center
of Gettysburg.

Gavin Collection - Rear Impact Gardner Bullet - Great Example
found on the Cold Harbor Battlefield
-
This relic came from Gavin's display case with relics that were identified as having been found at
Cold Harbor. This is a very neat example of a high impact fired Gardner bullet that apparently
struck something rear first. The impact has pushed the skirt up and you can clearly see the folds from the insert. A letter, signed by me, with provenance information and a copy of the photograph of the original
display case will be provided to the buyer.

This relic came from Gavin's display case with relics that were identified as having been found at

Gavin Collection - Possibly Battle Damaged Trigger Guard
found on the Cold Harbor Battlefield
-

This relic came from Gavin's display case with relics that were identified as having been found at Cold
Harbor. This is a Springfield trigger guard assembly. The butt end of the guard is severely bent downward.
This damage would be characteristic of a severe blow upon the butt of the musket that would have broken the wooden stock and
then bent the iron. This is often seen when the musket is swung against something. The assembly
is complete and still has the original label that Gavin placed upon it (it has fallen off). It has not been cleaned
other than a basic removal of dirt. A letter, signed by me, with provenance information and a copy of the photograph
of the original display case will be provided to the buyer. This item may be seen in case 52 at the Antique
Center of Gettysburg.-

or discarded). A letter, signed by me, with provenance information and a copy of the photograph of the original display
