MARCH 10TH - NEW!!! Bill Gavin Collection - Part of a U.S.
Plate Skin
Recovered at Confederate
Camp Bartow (WV) with Original Label
-

This relic was acquired from a riker case which housed a variety of relics from different battlefields
identified by Gavin's handwritten labels. Almost half of a U.S. plate skin that still has Gavin's original handwritten label
(actually tape, although it is no longer attached) - "Camp Bartow". Camp Bartow was established by Georgia
troops of General Henry R. Jackson in the summer of 1861 after the Battle of Rich Mountain. The
camp, which guarded the Staunton-Parkersburg Road was plagued with disease and was abandoned in November of 1861. A
letter, signed by me, with provenance information will be provided by the buyer. This
item may be seen in case 52 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.

Gavin Collection - Two Eagle Buttons
Recovered at Cedar Mountain
-
These buttons were acquired from a riker case which housed a variety of relics from different battlefields
identified by Gavin's handwritten labels. Two eagle buttons from Cedar Mountain - the vest sized button is 20 mm and
has been crushed on one side - the cuff button (15 mm) still has string attached to the loop - it has a small push in the
face. I cannot make out back marks on either. Gavin's handwritten label "Cedar Mt. 2 buttons" appears
in the photograph - I will include it with the buttons. A letter, signed by
me, with provenance information will be provided by the buyer.
This item may be seen in case 52 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.

Gavin Collection - Model 1842 Springfield Side Plate
Possible Battle Damage - Recovered at Spotsylvania
-

This relic was acquired from a riker case which housed a variety of relics from different battlefields
identified by Gavin's handwritten labels. This is the side plate (with screws) of a Model 1842 Springfield musket.
The way that it is twisted may very well indicate that the musket was struck or damaged during the battle. Gavin's handwritten
label "Spotsylvania found by WGG (William G. Gavin)" appears in the photograph - I will include it with this relic
(it was associated with 5 relics in the case). It is in "as dug" condition and has not
been cleaned or coated with anything. A letter, signed by me, with provenance information
will be provided by the buyer. This item may
be seen in case 52 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.

Gavin Collection - .69 Caliber Fired Bullet
Possible Double Load Bullet - Gaines Mill
-

This bullet was acquired from a riker case which housed a variety of relics from different battlefields
identified by Gavin's handwritten labels. This is a fired .69 caliber bullet - the impression on the top looks like
it might have been from a double load (the soldier loaded another bullet on top of this one before firing). It looked
as though the relics in this case shifted a bit, so I cannot be 100% certain that the label that was near given relics does
indeed identify where they were found - but this bullet was right at a Gaine's Mill label (this label can be seen in the photograph,
but is not included with the bullet). A letter, signed by me, with provenance
information will be provided by the buyer. This item may be seen in case 52 at the
Antique Center of Gettysburg.

Gavin Collection - .54 Caliber Sharps & Hankins Bullet
Gaines Mill
-
This bullet was acquired from a riker case which housed a variety of relics from different battlefields
identified by Gavin's handwritten labels. This is a rare Sharps and Hankins bullet (MM 515). It looks as though
it may have been fired as the nose is dented, but the damage is minimal. It looked as though the relics in this case
shifted a bit, so I cannot be 100% certain that the label that was near given relics does indeed identify where they were
found - but this bullet was right at a Gaine's Mill label (this label can be seen in the photograph, but is not included with
the bullet). A letter, signed by me, with provenance information
will be provided by the buyer. This item may be seen in case 52 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.

Gavin Collection - .69 Caliber Tower Bullet
Gaines Mill
-

This bullet was acquired from a riker case which housed a variety of relics from different battlefields
identified by Gavin's handwritten labels. This is a .69 caliber Tower bullet - it measures about .95 inches in length.
This one appears to have been fired as there are a couple of dents on the nose and the skirt is slightly out of shape - but
the damage is minimal. It looked as though the relics in this case shifted a bit, so I cannot be 100% certain that the
label that was near given relics does indeed identify where they were found - but this bullet was right at a Gaine's Mill
label (this label can be seen in the photograph, but is not included with the bullet). A
letter, signed by me, with provenance information will be provided by the
buyer. This item may be seen in case 52 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.

Gavin Collection - Fussell's Mill, Va. Two Bullets &
Pocket Watch Cover w Gavin's Original Handwritten Label
-

These relics were acquired in a riker case marked #97 which housed a variety of relics from different
battlefields, each identified by one of Gavin's handwritten labels. These two .58 caliber bullets and watch
cover were identified as having been found at the Fussell's Mill, VA. One of the bullets is relatively crude
and appears to have a sprue on the nose so it was probably cast. The watch cover is made of a very light material - it might
be post-Civil War. The Battle of Fussell's Mill, also called the Second Battle of Deep Bottom, was fought between August
14th and 20th, 1864, and was part of the Seige of Petersburg. The label, of course, will be included with this group.
A letter, signed by me, with provenance information will be provided by
the buyer. This item may be seen in case 52 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.
