BILL GAVIN - FISHER'S HILL BATTLEFIELD
-
Fisher's Hill, which was located just outside of Strasburg, Virginia, was the site of a September 21st
and 22nd, 1864 battle that really ended the fight for control of the upper portion of the Shenandoah Valley. After the Battle
of Cedar Creek, the remnants of Lt. General Jubal Early's Confederate army retreated to a strong position anchored on Fisher's
Hill. Major General Phil Sheridan's larger army of 30,000 men was able to outflank the 10,000 men that Early commanded and
the Confederate line was broken.

Gavin Collection - Unusual Enfield Bullet
Blown Out Skirt? - found at the Fisher's Hill Battlefield
-

This relic came from Gavin's display case #98 which had relics that were identified as having been
found at Fisher's Hill. This Enfield bullet has got me stumped. At first I assumed that
it was carved and that the soldier had removed most of the skirt, but closer examination reveals what appear to be rifling
marks which would indicate that it was fired. There is also a thin circle around the circumference of the nose.
I suspect now that the thin skirt on this Enfield may have been blown off during firing - perhaps it was the second bullet
in a double load which might account for the mark on the nose. I don't know - it is certainly odd. A letter, signed
by me, with provenance information and a copy of the photograph of the original display case will be provided to the buyer.

This relic came from Gavin's display case #98 which had relics that were identified as having been found

bent. A letter, signed by me, with provenance information and a copy of the photograph of the original display case

Gavin Collection - Large Iron Buckle - Perhaps a Confederate
Belt Buckle? - found at the Fisher's Hill Battlefield
-

This relic came from Gavin's display case #98 which had relics that were identified as having been
found at Fisher's Hill. This is a large iron buckle (2 5/8 long x 2 1/8 high) that has a raised center
bar and a slightly shaped bar for the belt attachment. The tongue is heavy iron and appears to be hand forged.
This is certainly the right size to be a waist belt buckle, but it also might not be. Unlike most of Gavin's iron relics,
this one appears to have been cleaned and there are some spots of an acrylic coating. A letter, signed
by me, with provenance information and a copy of the photograph of the original display case will be provided
to the buyer. This item may be seen in case 52 at the Antique
Center of Gettysburg.
