BILL GAVIN COLLECTION - 1862-1863 WINTER CAMP OF JACKSON'S CORPS
MOSS NECK, VA
| Gavin's Original Display - Case 15 - Moss Neck |

|
This case was identified as number 15 in Gavin's collection. The relics in this case were identified
as having been found at the winter 1862-1863 Confederate camp at Moss Neck, Virginia. After the Battle of Fredericksburg,
Lt. General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's corps made its winter camp on the grounds of the grand estate of James
Corbin, known as Moss Neck, just south of Fredericksburg. Jackson made his headquarters in one
of the outbuildings while his troops constructed shelters from the wood that could be found on the grounds.
Jackson's stay at Moss Neck is depicted in the movie Gods and Generals as is the Christmas day review of
Jackson's troops by Robert E. Lee. A famous story about Jackson from this time relates to his attachment to
one of the Corbin's daughters who passed away from illness in early 1863.
