BILL GAVIN COLLECTION - 1862-1863 WINTER CAMP OF JACKSON'S CORPS
MOSS NECK, VA

Gavin's Original Display - Case 15 - Moss Neck
BG015.JPG

This case was identified as number 15 in Gavin's collection.  The relics in this case were identified as having been found at the winter 1862-1863 Confederate camp at Moss Neck, Virginia.  After the Battle of Fredericksburg, Lt. General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's corps made its winter camp on the grounds of the grand estate of James Corbin, known as Moss Neck, just south of Fredericksburg.  Jackson made his headquarters in one of the outbuildings while his troops constructed shelters from the wood that could be found on the grounds.  Jackson's stay at Moss Neck is depicted in the movie Gods and Generals as is the Christmas day review of Jackson's troops by Robert E. Lee.  A famous story about Jackson from this time relates to his attachment to one of the Corbin's daughters who passed away from illness in early 1863.

This rare relic came from Gavin's display case number 15 which housed relics identified as having been found at the Confederate 1862-1863 winter camp at Moss Neck.  This is the hilt from a Confederate Boyle & Gamble sword bayonet. It has a crooked number "88" imprinted on it.  This relic is just under 3 3/4 inches in length.  The mounting socket has been bent out of shape.  You won't see too many of these on the market and the Gavin provenance makes it a particularly nice piece.  Gavin's original identification card for the case will be included with this relic.  A letter, signed by me, with provenance information and a copy of the photograph of the original display case will be provided to the buyer.  This item may be seen in case 52 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg.
