the 1970s or early 1980s
-
This Georgia button, which appears to be a local, has a recessed channel on the back and
no back mark (23 mm). The button still retains a good deal of its gilt. The face has been crushed a bit
causing cracking and some loss. This button was found by relic hunter Terry Waxham at Vicksburg in either

possession of it until I acquired it this year. I will include a letter, signed

Confederate Kenansville Cavalry Sword Battlefield Pick Up Found at Luray, Virginia in the 1880s
-

This relic sword is almost certainly a Confederate Kenansville copy of a U.S. Cavalry
sword. About half of the blade is present (16 inches in length - it would have been 34 or 35 inches) and the
only thing missing is the grip. The casting of the brass is crude with several imperfections and the Roman
numeral XXVIIII is etched into the handle (the assembly number - typical of Kenansville swords). The guard
is pointed at the top which is also typical of Kenansville. This was originally acquired by a Civil War collector
in 1994 from the Horse Soldier with the provenance that it was a Kenansville sword and was part of an old collection
of Shenandoah Valley relics - this piece, specifically, was picked up in the 1880s at Luray, Virginia. In 1864,
a cavalry battle was fought at Luray. The sword has a light coat of rust on the blade that would be typical
of a pick up. The sword remained in this collector's possession until I acquired it from him this year. This
is a really neat relic at a reasonable price! This item may be seen in case #63 at the Antique
Center of Gettysburg. I will include a letter, signed by me, with this
specific provenance.- Item

Gavin Collection - Confederate Sword Scabbard Drag found at A.P. Hill's Division Camp at Corbin, Virginia -

This relic came from Gavin's display case with relics that were identified as having been found at
Hill's 1862-1863 winter camp at Corbin, Va. This is a Confederate sword scabbard drag. I am not certain
who the manufacturer might have been, but the design clearly is not regulation army and almost certainly is from
a southern manufacturer. It is just under 5 inches long and is 1 1/8 inches wide at the top. There is
a 1 3/4 inch split in the seam at the top and a small seam split on the opposite side. It has been dented in
several places and has been partially crushed at the bottom. A letter, signed by me, with provenance information
and a copy of the photograph of the original display case will be provided to the buyer. This item
may be seen in case 52 at the Antique Center of Gettysburg. - Item Number BG18501 Price - Was $85.00 Now $65.00

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Unusual Dug Brass Rim from a Dragoon
Saddle - Probably a Grimsley Found
along the Confederate Retreat Route from Gettysburg near Fairfield, PA -

This is the first dug one of these that I have seen - it is one of the brass rims from a saddle - probably
a pattern 1847 Grimsley Dragoon saddle. It stands about 11 1/2 inches tall and is 13 1/4 inches wide at the
base. It was recovered from an area along the Confederate retreat route near the village of Fairfield, PA
which is a short distance southwest of Gettysburg. The U.S. cavalry regiments passed through Fairfield during
the pursuit of the Confederates and the 5th U.S. Cavalry was involved in a hot fight just outside of the village.
One end of the rim is a little damaged - you can see this in the photograph. I will provide a letter, signed
by me, with the provenance information. - - Item Number - G330 SOLD!

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Antietam - Probably the West Woods Rosette with Lead Filled Back -

This relic comes from a large Antietam collection that I just acquired. This
is a brass rosette with lead filled back. It is 1 5/8 inches in diameter. There is some rim damage and lead
loss and the face is slightly bent. All of the items in the collection were dug by the same relic hunter in
the 1970s and early 1980s. I did not acquire the collection from the digger, but the provenance on the items
is strong (I will provide the full provenance in the letter that is included with the item). The relic hunter
did most of his digging in the area of the West Woods but also apparently hunted near the Bloody Lane and some other locations on the battlefield(on private
property with permission). Some of the relics in the group had numbers painted on them, but, since I do not
have the original location key, I cannot say specifically where each relic came from other than the fact that it
is from Antietam and, in all likelihood, from the West Woods. This relic has no number painted on it. I will
include a letter, signed by me, noting this provenance. - Item Number - A240 Price - Was $27.50
